By popular request, Ron Domingue passes along Jeffrey Zeldman's top 10 Tips for web designers, which he encountered at An Event Apart:

1. Don't work with friends.

2. Don't work for friends.

3. Say no to rush jobs.

4. Never under price your work.

5. No SPEC!

6. Five letters: SCOPE. Be firm yet flexible.

7. Learn to avoid bad clients and bad jobs.

8. Build trust.

9. Sell ideas not pixels.

10. Always bring it back to the user.

Raymond Camden's Gravatar I think most of this makes great sense, but I think 1 and 2 are debatable. It all depends on your personality. If you don't mind a friend criticizing your code - if you can take it as a learning experience - then I think it's fine to work with friends.

James Edmunds's Gravatar I agree. I have had pretty good success working with friends, usually on projects where we seem to be thinking of ourselves as solving a problem together... my part of it being the web site.
